Boy meets girl, girl falls in love with boy and raids his closet. The borrowing from the boys trend has never been better, and even though I can’t physically borrow from my boyfriend (our 1+ foot height difference throws off proportions) it doesn’t stop me from shopping the boys and mens departments in every store, doubling my shopping radius! Remember last year when I scored this amazing Marni men’s cashmere sweater? And just yesterday I picked up the most comfortable heather grey on grey men’s baseball tee. If these items were hanging in my man’s closet (and if he were closer to my stature) you better believe I’d be fighting him for wearing rights.

Dermot and I have lived in our apartment for a year now and have yet to hang anything on the walls in most of the rooms, we feel ok about not having curtains in the living room because our neighbors across the alley always have theirs closed and we never noticed how dark it was at our dining table until having our parents over for dinner asking what they were eating. Needless to say we have never had any overnight guests, until now that is. Both my best friend (1) and Dermot’s best friends (2) requested to stay at our apartment during fashion week, so we have to get busy! This gives us only a few short weeks to make our apartment ready for 3 houseguests! Our list…
1. Create artwork for the walls (so I don’t have to try to hide the blank canvases behind the sofa). I am currently loving the artwork that looks handmade but has simple visual interest
2. Find lighting to help light up the dining table without interfering with the chandelier hanging in the middle of the room. Corner bulbs, floor lamps or side mounted lighting all seem like great options.
3. Hang living room curtains if for no other reason than to provide privacy for our guest staying in our 2nd guest bedroom (i.e. the sofa). We have great light in our living room so I want to stick to a sheer curtain.
I’ll let you know how it all turns out!

It’s no secret that black and white are my best friends, so this week I hung out with them in the striped form. Loving the graphic element of the most common contrasting colors around, black and white stripes are
trending for Spring, but to be honest when are they not trending? Here are my top three tips for wearing black and white stripes right now.
1- Tie it around your waist:I love how this striped sweater brightens up an otherwise simple outfit.
2- Pick a not-so-basic silhouette in a classic stripe: This Rachel Zoe striped sweater gets as much wear as a my favorite tee but the asymmetrical hem and draping detail make it so much more than that.
3-Layer it: Stripes are the ultimate layering tool for your wardrobe. I chose to wear a longer tank under a lightweight cashmere sweater so the stripe slightly shows through. Bonus- the hems of the tank and sweater were identical shape, making this a perfect match!

This isn’t the first Clutch DIY featured on DeSmitten, but its been a while so I thought it needed a bit of an update. Envelope and fold over clutches are still a street style staple, and to catch the attention of the photogs it’s all about the leather color and quality. I chose to use a mustard yellow suede (hint: I just used the back of the leather hide) and in the fashion of all things athletic, I used a perforated black leather for contrast.
Be sure to choose sturdy leathers that can hold the important contents of your clutch.
Choosing the dimensions is totally up to you, or in my case it was up to the hide. I only had enough good-looking suede for a 10 3/4″ x 8 1/2″ clutch. Ideally you would want it large enough to carry your tablet. Be sure to add 1/4″ seam allowance to your desired completed size.
If you have enough leather or suede, you can opt to cut this out as one piece instead of seaming it together. I find the flap stays closed better when there is a seam connecting these two parts.
And turn inside out! It really is as easy as that.
Hedi Slimane is taking Saint Laurent by storm with his edgy styling and moody black and white photography. This has only made my pre-Saint Laurent love for his photography grow. Slimane’s epitomise androgynous rocker vibe is hard to ignore, but why try? Pairing his images from the Saint Lauren Pre-Fall 13 look book with photos from Anthology of a Decade reinforces his undeniable style and energy that I will never tire of.

When it comes to beauty supplies, seeing isn’t always believing – the undercover elements are most important for putting your best face forward. My favorite covert products gently exfoliate my face, brighten my dark circles, give a little grunge to my mane, and make sure each hair on my brow is perfectly placed.
1: Fresh Soy Face Cleanser / 2: Muji Face Brush / 3: Laura Mercier Repair Eye Serum / 4: Brilliantime Bumble and Bumble / 5: Benefit Speed Brow
Cuffs aren’t exclusive to your wrists anymore ladies, they have migrated north to save your ears from a life of boredom. As the hottest new jewelry trend since statement necklaces, Ear Cuffs are a mainstay in today’s street style. Stealing my heart during Spring 2013 fashion week, I’ve sifted through hundreds of Ear Cuff inspiration images to bring you my top picks for day and night. Whether you are running errands around the city or brunching with friends, the play on an everyday hoop earring comes in the form of a hoop cuff climbing your cartilage. For night, amp things up with a little opulence and adorn your ears with edgy stones and over the top silhouettes.
